Balancing people & nature,
Sumu breathes like a forest
Over the past 18 months, we have seen our fast-moving lives slow to a more gentle pace, shifting our focus much closer to home. With this reconfiguration has come the opportunity to think more deeply about the way we live and our relationship with the earth. At the same time, our communities and connections to the natural world have gained new significance.
Sumu Yakushima was born from our desire to create a place where people can reconnect with nature and broaden their horizons.
Nestled between the mountains and the ocean on Yakushima’s south coast, Sumu has been designed with a mix of traditional wisdom and progressive technology, resulting in a network of spaces shaped by the flow of the landscape. Nature and architecture share a symbiotic connection, creating a place that grows and breathes like a forest.
Sumu is a place where fresh encounters and experiences, away from the routine nature of daily life, can inspire alternate ways of thinking and provide a catalyst for positive change.
New ideas can grow from the smallest of seeds.
